Firms call for more premises

BUSINESSES are suffering from a shortage of ‘suitable premises’ and the lack of a skilled workforce, according to a report into how the economy of a South Yorkshire town could be improved.

Barnsley Council’s economy and skills scrutiny commission has called for more financial help for companies and renewed efforts to ensure people gain more qualifications.

The commission has submitted a number of recommendations to the council’s cabinet based on its findings.

Central to them is a new employability programme, which would see schools, colleges, and local employers working together to help young people and the long-term unemployed develop the skills they need to be successful in an increasingly competitive jobs market.
