The residential suburb of Walkley may not seem the obvious place to champion home-grown produce, but it is now the proud host to Sheffield’s first ‘inner city farm shop.’
Butcher Chris Beech has been building up the local brand since he took over his South Road shop three years ago.
Now he and wife Donna have embarked on a major expansion, taking over a neighbouring empty unit and stocking it with a range of goods that they have sourced at farmers’ markets over the last few months.
The new shop will sell everything from meat and cheese to fish and preserves.
Chris has recently been awarded the Made in Sheffield mark and he intends to promote other small Sheffield businesses alongside his own produce.
His award-winning sausages include the Sheffield Secret Sausage, with its mystery ingredient, available only from his shop.
His fruit shop Fruits and Roots, just over the road, has recently expanded into wholefoods and vegetarian produce, and is now well established.
Chris says: “I want to encourage customers to get back to the joys of cooking for themselves, instead of relying on processed, packaged, over-priced supermarket produce.
“People have warmed to ‘the Walkley quarter’. We’re rebuilding the community with the aim of getting people back to using independent local shops – with the personal touch. We want the village feel back and people love it!”
