Flats scheme for site of Sheffield working men's club
Plans have been lodged to demolish Handsworth Working Men’s Club and Institute, on Handsworth Road, and put up 27 flats in a single three-storey block.
A design statement to Sheffield Council by architects MaxDesign, on behalf of Spandrel Homes, says the club is ‘proving unviable to operate’ and that local pubs were able to ‘provide community services’ instead.

“This is a sustainable development, in a sustainable location,” the architects said.
However, Dianne Hurst, Labour councillor for the Darnall ward, has raised concerns about traffic, saying the plans were ‘rather imposing’.
“The development will increase the volume of traffic attempting to access the main road at rush hour and the parking on the street,” she said.
