Former Sheffield Wednesday chairman Matt Sheppard has died at the age of 90.

Mr Sheppard was at the helm of the club between 1973 and 1976.

The married father-of-three, who had nine grandchildren and one great grandchild, died on Thursday.

Mr Sheppard, a chartered accountant and financial adviser during his working years, was a former president of the Chamber of Commerce in Sheffield and the Chartered Accountants Society.

He was also a former president of the scouts movement in Sheffield.

He was born in Sheffield and lived in the city until eight years ago, when he moved to Gloucestershire.

His funeral mass is to be held at St Michael’s Church, Tetbury, Gloucestershire, on Monday, April 13 at 2.30pm.

A Sheffield Wednesday spokesman said: “We are saddened to learn of the passing of Matt Sheppard and send our deepest sympathies to his family and friends at this difficult time.

“The born and bred Wednesdayite from Firth Park first joined the club as an advisor then accountant before being opted on to the board of directors before becoming chairman.”
