Jim qualified for his full FA Coaching Badge in 1958, and in 1974, after coaching Bradford and managing Rotherham, he returned to Hillsborough as reserve team boss before following in his brother’s footsteps by becoming caretaker manager after the departure of Steve Burtenshaw.

A Sheffield Wednesday spokesman said: “The talented Scot would surely have figured more for the Owls but found stiff competition for a shirt during his time at the club.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Jim at this difficult time.”
