Former tram depot arches transformed in art project

Seven archways of Sheffield’s iconic former Leadmill Tram Depot have been transformed as part of a large-scale optical art project.

S1 Artspace commissioned Sheffield-based visual artist Simon Bill to convert the historic tram depot on Shoreham Street into a space for presenting a series of ambitious large-scale paintings.

Drawing on a range of sources – including history, popular culture, music, philosophy, war, cookery, comedy and science – Bill’s chosen subjects are succinctly brought together on a collection of oval shaped canvasses.

Organisers said the paintings, titled ‘Irises’, also create space for Bill to further explore neon spreading illusion art and its ability to fool onlookers.

Irises opens to the public at Leadmill Archways today and will close in March 2015.
