SCHOOLGIRLS will say a final farewell to their 16-year-old friend today after the teenager died suddenly in her sleep.

The funeral of gifted Sheffield High School pupil Alexandra Reid will be held at St Mark’s Church in Broomhill this afternoon,

Many fellow pupils who have just finished their GCSE exams are expected to attend the ceremony, along with friends of her younger sister.

Valerie Dunsford, headteacher of the girls’ school, said there were also hopes of some kind of memorial being made to the ‘lovely girl’ in September after discussions with the family.

She added: “It was with great sadness that we learned of the tragic death of Alex.

“Our thoughts are with her family, who have lost a loving daughter and sister.

“Alex was a lovely girl, always smiling, who excelled at drama and sport and was well-known and well-liked by all who knew her.

“She was about to complete her GCSE exams and had just begun a work placement at a local hospital.

“Alex was full of promise for a bright future Her untimely death is a tragedy for her family, her friends and the school community here.”

Alex was found unresponsive in her bed by her father John, who is a GP, at home in Thorpe Salvin, two weeks ago.

She was about to finish her GCSE exams and wanted to follow her father’s footsteps into medicine as a future career.

A message posted on Kiveton Park Medical Centre’s website said: “We are sorry to advise patients that Dr Reid’s eldest daughter Alex has died unexpectedly in her sleep.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this very sad time.”

Tributes have also been posted online to the former Todwick Primary School pupil by shocked friends.

One read ‘RIP Alex, you’ll be missed greatly’ and another said ‘It still hasn’t sunk in.”

An inquest was opened and adjourned at Doncaster Coroner’s Court last week.

The funeral takes place at 1.45pm.
