Fulwood makes the grade as place to live

The neighbourhood was one of eight Yorkshire locations featured in the fifth annual Best Places to Live in Britain guide by The Sunday Times, and came in at number five in the North and North East category.

The list’s compilers said Sheffield’s location on the fringe of the Peak District was ‘what’s really great’ about the city, arguing Fulwood was superior to ‘studenty’ Ecclesall and Dore - which the newspaper claimed was ‘slightly pleased with itself’.

Golf, tennis and parks along the Porter Valley were recommended, and Forge Dam Café, with its ‘mean’ breakfasts, was described as unmissable. The lack of a pub was mentioned, but residents have ‘happily colonised the Rising Sun, down the road in Nether Green’.

“From the transformation of Park Hill to the regeneration of the Orgreave colliery site and the creation of a hipster island quarter at Kelham Island, the developers have been doing their but for this friendly, creative city, which really deserves to step out of the long shadows cast by Leeds and Manchester,” the listing said about Sheffield generally.

However, it added: “But the city centre still hasn’t recovered from the flight of shops and shoppers to the Meadowhall retailopolis.”

And what do the locals say, according to the compilers?

“You can swap your home-grown carrots for a pint of Daily Bread bitter.”

This accolade comes just a year after the S10 postcode, which includes Fulwood, was named as one of the country’s premier locations to set up home in a similar survey by Lloyds Bank.
