Golf: Danny Willett gets off to fine start in Cadillac Championship but more frustration for Matt Fitzpatrick

Danny Willett's superb run of recent form continued as he made a superb start to the World Golf Championships Cadillac Championship in Florida.

But fellow Sheffield golfer Matt Fitzpatrick saw his struggling start to 2016 rumble on as he fell way off the pace at the Trump National in Doral.

In one of the first groups to head out on Thursday, Willett started well, carding four birdies in his first nine holes, showing a superb touch with the putter as he dropped 17 and 22 foot putts.

He could not maintain the pace into the afternoon, posting a birdie and a bogey to finish with a four under par round of 68.

That score was enough to see Willett finish his first round in a tie for fourth – three shots behind Australian Marcus Fraser – and the only European in the top 12.

Later in the day and on his World Golf Championships debut, Fitzpatrick birdied the par five 12th after starting his round on ten but that would prove to be his only positive move of the day.

Five bogeys followed in the remaining holes, seeing him finish with a four over par round of 76 and tied for 56th in the 66 man field.

Fitzpatrick has missed two cuts in his last three tournaments
