Grand Départ mastermind scoops top Yorkshire cycling award

The mastermind behind the Yorkshire Grand Départ of the Tour de France has been awarded a top honour in the cycling world.

Gary Verity, CEO of Welcome to Yorkshire, has scooped the C A Rhodes Memorial for 2014.

The award is regarded as the greatest distinction Yorkshire cycling can bestow and was created in memory of Yorkshire cycling stalwart Charles Arthur Rhodes, who died in 1961.
The award trustees said: “Gary’s vision of bringing the Tour de France Grand Départ to Yorkshire and his drive and determination to lead his team to a successful execution have raised the profile of Yorkshire as a tourist destination, as an area capable of hosting world class events and has massively increased participation in cycling.”
