New research will give doctors a further insight into distinguishing whether memory loss is a sign of early dementia or other problems.
Researchers at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and the University of Sheffield, in collaboration with Loughborough University, are the first in the world to use ‘conversation analysis’ to see if patients with memory lapse have dementia, or memory issues related to mood or anxiety-related problems.
Around 800,000 people have dementia in the UK, but many others remain undiagnosed.
Researchers found there are two distinct conversational profiles for patients with dementia and those with memory concerns unrelated to dementia.
It will allow doctors to use patient conversations as a diagnostic tool.
