Hopefuls line up for Miss England title

Calling all South Yorkshire beauties – this is your chance to shine.

Talent scouts from Miss England are on the hunt for girls in Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster to take part in the world-famous contest.

Five luscious ladies have already been chosen as finalists in the South Yorkshire heat and one of them, 16-year-old Andrea Cawrey, from Swinton, said it has been a massive confidence boost already.

She said: “For years I got bullied because of my eyes.

“It’s because they’re big, but my family kept saying I have the eyes of a model.

“I had a portfolio of pictures done and then when I saw the Miss England contest advertised I thought ‘This could be my chance’.

“I entered and the next thing I know I’m through to the final.

“It’s all about building my confidence. It’s something I want to take a lot further.”

Andrea, a student at Sheffield College and a waitress at the Holiday Inn in Rotherham, is also eager to participate in the charity work carried out as part of the contest.

She said: “I really like doing things for charity.

“The last thing I did for charity was I got a tattoo done for breast cancer.

“I had the breast cancer ribbon tattooed on my shoulder for Macmillan Cancer Support.”

The other four finalists so far are Alicia Skill of Dinnington, Danielle Floyd of Barnsley, Keighly Pugh of Doncaster and Rhianna Higgins of Doncaster.

Organisers of the Miss England contest, in association with Sheffield-based DK Models, are holding a second audition for the South Yorkshire heat of Miss England this month.

Angie Beasley, director, said: “We are looking for the next Miss England, someone who wants to use her beauty for a purpose.

“The Miss England contestants in the last year have raised in excess of £550,000 for disadvantaged children and families in this country.

“People think we are a modelling competition based on looks alone, but part of the contest is a sports round and you have to get actively involved with fundraising locally to prove you are more than just a pretty face.”

Twenty finalists will be chosen for the regional final on February 14, an eco-fashion show and Valentine’s Ball at Sheffield’s Hilton Hotel.
