Hostel plan is rejected after local objections

Protesters this week successfully fought plans to turn the former Urban Theology Unit in Burngreave into a hostel for homeless and other vulnerable people.

They convinced councillors that the proposed use of the building in Abbeyfield Road was unsuitable, especially with a children’s home next door.

The council’s children, young people and family service questioned the location, which would mean two groups of “exceptionally vulnerable” people living next door to each other.

Christian-based charity Lighthouse Homes was seeking council permission to provide managed accommodation for up to 16 people, including those who may have physical or mental health problems.
