Hundreds of people have called for a town council in Barnsley to be abolished.

A community vote was held this week on whether Brierley Town Council should be retained or not, after former town council clerk Janet Cooper landed it with a debt of more than £1 million and was jailed for fraud.

In total 983 people voted to abolish the council and 202 to keep it, a turnout of 21 per cent.

Barnsley Council will make a final decision, with a meeting on July 30.
