A spokesman said: “Earlier today we were alerted to a big burst on one of our water mains on St Mary’s Road in Sheffield City Centre.

“We’re working as hard as we can to fix the damage as soon as possible and we’d like to thank people for their patience whilst the work is carried out.”

It is near to where a similar burst caused major disruption last July.

Some residents have said they are still without water supplies.

Ronamy Lomas said: “We’ve had no water all day. Been and spent a small fortune on bottled water because they haven’t even bothered to put any water vats out.

“I’ve asked if I’ll get rebate on our already extortionate water bill . Their answer - we’re doing all we can! Yorkshire Water are useless!”

Marie Rowbottom said: “Not nice when your husband's just done a 12 hour night shift then comes home to not even being able to have a bath or shower.”

Kate Leatherbarrow said: “What about the homes in a wide area that have had no water all afternoon and no news on it coming back on?”
