No team in the second-tier have picked up more points (34) than Carlos Carvalhal’s side in the last 16 matches.

Stunning goals by Almen Abdi and Fernando Forestieri helped the Owls record a 2-1 victory at Nottingham Forest last weekend and the result edged them closer to play-off rivals Reading and Leeds United.

With Norwich City suffering a surprise 2-1 defeat Burton Albion, Wednesday have opened up a seven point gap over the seventh-placed Canaries. The Owls also have a game in hand on Norwich.

But Westwood, who denied Ross McCormack from the penalty spot in the first half after fouling Ben Brereton, insists there is a still a long way to go in the promotion battle.

“There are 14 games left so we will keep ticking the games off,” he told The Star. “If we keep doing what we are doing, we will be in the play-offs and that’s what we are looking for.

“We want to give ourselves a chance of promotion. It is what we are trying to do and at the moment it is working for us.

“We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. We have won four games in a row but we have to keep going.

“We don’t want to be looking over our shoulder to see teams trying to catch us. There are a lot of good teams in this league and anyone can go on a run.

“There’s Norwich, Derby and others all chasing us and I’m sure they are not going to give up. If we were in the opposite position, we wouldn’t be giving up on trying to get into the top six.

“There are plenty of games to go so we need to stay grounded and keep grinding out those wins.”

The Owls host Brentford tomorrow aiming to keep their good run going and Westwood has praised the team’s ability to dig in and pick up positive results.

“We ground out the result (at Forest), which is becoming a habit now,” he said. “We don’t win games by four or five nil.

“We can see out a game which is fantastic trait to have when we go in front. The professionalism is there and long may it continue.”

Tom Lees is close to resuming first-team training but the defender and Gary Hooper are unlikely to be involved against the Bees. Morgan Fox (ankle) could return.
