Kell Brook has said he wants a big unification battle at his favourite football stadium, somewhere in or around the month of July.

And of the boxers of the required stature who are available, the most likely candidate is now American Jessie Vargas.

The 26-year-old from Los Angeles won the vacant WBO World welterweight title this month and has only been beaten once, by another Brook-target, Timothy Bradley.

Ironically, Brook’s camp would prefer to fight Bradley.

But he is slated to fight Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas on April 9 and might not be as easier fight to make at this stage, especially if the fight was to be in England.

Ideally, Brook would take Vargas’s WBO belt in a Summer show at Bramall Lane and then make himself for the victor of the Bradley-Pacquiao...which is the type of super-fight the Sheffielder has yearned for, for years. Pacquiao may retire though.

First date on Brook’s dance card is Canadian Kevin Bizier, at Sheffield Arena on March 26, in his third defence of his IBF title.

Then, perhaps, local fans would see Vargas, who has 27 wins, and a points loss to Bradley, on his record.

Vargas has travelled outside his home land before, he beat Antonio DeMarco in China in November 2014.

One complication could be that Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says he wants to match Juan Manuel Marquez against Vargas.
