ASDA looks set for council permission to alter the layout of its car park at Handsworth – and to make it bigger.
City planners agree that it would help to reduce queuing, congestion and air pollution, making it easier to get around the car park of the premises at the junction of Handsworth Road and the Sheffield Parkway.
Although an extra 86 parking spaces would be created they would primarily be for the benefit of existing shoppers rather than encouraging new ones, it is argued.
Councillors will give their verdict on Monday, taking into account a 33-name petition. Critics says there is already traffic congestion in the area and this will be made worse when an Aldi supermarket opens near the Asda.
Asda, which withdrew plans for a store extension, points to consultation with Handsworth Community Forum, the East End Quality Initiative and local MPs and says an in-store consultation produced overwhelming support.
