SHEFFIELD CATHEDRAL! Sheffield Bach Choir and the National Festival Orchestra present

the first event of the Bach Choir’s 69th concert series since the group’s foundation in 1950. It is till not too late to join the choir to sing with us this coming season. Please contact Choir

Secretary Liz Arnesen on 07960 523 911.The 2018/19 season will be Dr Simon Lindley’s

tenth as the conductor of this celebrated Northern Choir presided over for so long by the

legendary Dr Roger Bullivant MBE. All the music in the Concert on Saturday 6 October at

7.30 is by French composers: Gabriel Fauré, Francis Poulenc and Maurice Duruflé, whose

glorious Requiem founded entirely on Plainchant themes occupies the whole of the second

half of the evening. Cathedral Organist and Director of Music Thomas Corns is the soloist in

Poulenc’s famous Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani and music sung by the Choir in

the first half includes the same composer’s deeply moving Litanies to the Black Virgin of

Rocamadour and his motet for unaccompanied voices in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

Salve Regina. Fauré’s greatly-loved Cantique of Jean Racine will be given with full orchestral

accompaniment in the version by leading English composer John Rutter. The National

Festival Orchestra’s distinguished harpist, Manchester-based Alice Kirwan will be the featured player in the Fauré Cantique and in Duruflé’s Requiem. Vocal soloists are Joanna Gamble, mezzo soprano and Thomas Asher, baritone. Alan Horsey is the orchestral and

accompanimental organist in the Requiem and music in the first half, with the exception of the concerto. The Choristers of Sheffield Cathedral will be featured in the Requiem. Duruflé left instructions towards the end of his long life that a children’s chorus was, if possible, to be

deployed at a number of brief, yet hugely prominent, sections throughout the work. Further
