Alex Stoia from Ecclesall Tennis Club frustration mounted as he was runner up in the Men’s Open singles final for a second year running, narrowly missing out to James Ledger.

Stoia went a break up (4-2) in the third and final set only to see his lead diminish as Ledger took back control to win the deciding set 7-5.

Stoia’s frustration didn’t end there, he and partner Richard Furness then went on to play the Men’s Open Doubles Final against Joshua Gledden and Mushraf Raouf from Abbeydale Tennis Club losing out 6-3, 7-5.

The Women’s Open singles final was a long hard fought match between Louise Holtum and Olivia Noble with Holtum being the eventual winner.

Holtum went on to do the treble also winning the Women’s Open doubles pairing up with Olivia Noble and the Mixed Open doubles partnering brother Jonty Holtum against Joshua Gledden and Ellen Plaskitt, this was again yet another one of the day’s long closely contested finals with the Holtums being the victors 3-6 6-1 6-2.

This year saw the Women’s 40+ Open doubles event take place, what a final that was between Sally-Ann Brennan and Jackie Lockham from Abbeydale and Jennifer Lewis and Jo Muscroft from Beauchief that could have gone either way, but it was the Abbeydale duo who managed to close it out in the third set 7-5.

In the Handicap Mixed doubles final Steve Wood and Belinda Gallup of Brentwood Tennis Club had all the odds against them against opponents William and Anna Griffiths of Graves Tennis Club, in another long three set match patience showed through with Wood and Gallup winning the deciding set 7-5.

Two new events were ibtroduced this year, the Men’s 60+ Open doubles and the Women’s 55+ Open doubles.

Number one seeds Wilf Jessop and Czes Wegrzynski beat John Andrews and Robert Mcilvenny in the final of the Men’s 60+ Open Doubles.

In the Women’s 55+ Open doubles Karen Holtum and Ruth Pearson of Bamford Tennis Club played against Janet Brook and Janette Reilly of Dore & Totley Tennis Club, just like so many of the finals that day little could separate the pairs with the match going the distance with Holtum and Pearson coming out on top in the in the penultimate set.
