Majority of Sheffield children get preferred school place - but some miss out

In total 6, 014 youngsters received a preferred place - 98.75 per cent of all those that applied in the city.

Both figures were slightly better than last years.

However about 75 kids have not got a place at one of the three schools they wanted to go to in September.

Jayne Ludlam, executive director of people services at Sheffield Council, was sympathetic to those families who have missed out.

She said: “Despite the ongoing pressure on primary places I’m pleased that Sheffield continues to perform well for its families and this is reflective of all the hard work over recent years to add school places where they are most needed.

“However my heart goes out to those children and families who have not got a school of their choosing, I understand and know how upsetting that can be.

“I would urge anyone who is not happy with their school place to get in touch with our admissions team for advice.”

These children will start at their new school in September.

Children who were not allocated any of their three preferences have either been referred to their catchment school or been allocated the nearest primary school with places available.

Parents also have the right to appeal and these will be processed in June and July.
