Mexborough man, 21, jailed for his part in almost derailing train

A 21-year-old man has been jailed for his part in a botched theft which almost caused a train to be derailed.

Jordan Andrewatha, of Cedar Avenue, Mexborough, was jailed for two years at Sheffield Crown Court after admitting arranging to receive a stolen wood chipper.

An ongoing British Transport Police probe has revealed the crime took place on November 7 near Swinton station. The culprits caused serious damage to a passenger train after the one-tonne wood chipper was driven onto the track and left there.

Det Insp Ian Trantum said: “Thankfully, the train was empty, apart from the driver and train manager, who feared the train would be derailed. Both were left extremely shaken.

“This act endangered lives and caused serious disruption to services.”
