S&J’s Pantry in the Moor Market is now selling ‘Hendo relish cheese’, made by blending Derbyshire cheese with the famous city condiment.

Business owners Jon and Su Youdan are keen to use local produce wherever possible. And once they came up with the latest recipe, the reception was excellent.

“The first delivery sold out in two days,” said Jon.

“It’s all very positive.”

The cheese, which has a mottled brown appearance, has both the creamy texture of the cheese and the sharp taste of the relish.

Jon says it is ideal as a dessert cheese, but could equally be the perfect accompaniment to beans on toast.

The idea came from a discussion with one of the company’s suppliers.

“We try to sell a lot of local products and we were looking for a cheese that reflected Sheffield,” said Jon.

“We have blended cheeses with other things in the past, such as beer from Brampton Brewery in Chesterfield.”

Jon and Su spent years running a pet supply business before deciding to branch into cheese and other deli-style products.

They spent about six months in the old Castle Market before moving into the Moor Market when it opened in November 2013.

“We’re quite happy in the market,” said Jon.

“We’re about where we expected to be in terms of our business plan.”

Alongside cheese, S&J Pantry specialises in locally-made produce as far as possible, such as yoghurt, cheeses, preserves and drinks. The stall also stocks traditional baking items and ingredients.

The new cheese is on sale at £1.25 per 100g.
