The proposals, which are recommended for approval, follow the granting of outline consent for the residential development in 2014.

The current application asks for permission for 58 homes - 11 two-bedroom properties, 12 three-bedroom houses, 27 four-bed homes and eight five-bedroom properties.

Access for cars will be provided at four points along Hastings Road, Millhouses.

Nearly 20 representations by members of the public were submitted to the council, including an objection by the Carterknowle and Millhouses Community Group.

The group said the application ‘fails to address and satisfy requirements’ for the wider site, also taking in the former Bannerdale Centre.

But in a report to a meeting of Sheffield Council’s planning committee on Tuesday, officers said: “The scheme’s design and layout is considered to be compatible with the character of the locality.”

Open space would be provided, fronting on to Hastings Road, Abbeydale Road and alongside woodland at the north of the site. Footpath access to the woodland is also proposed.

The school closed in 2010.
