Neil Warnock backing Sheffield Wednesday to grab play-off spot ahead of Cardiff City

Rotherham United manager and Sheffield United legend Neil Warnock gave Cardiff City chief Russell Slade a leg up in the game, appointing him as a youth team coach while at Notts County in the early 90s. Slade also spent time on the coaching staff at Bramall Lane.

Despite that, however, the master doesn't hold out much hope on his old apprentice getting what they need to stay in contention for a play-off place when the Bluebirds travel to Hillsborough on Saturday.

Wednesday are currently in sixth place, four points ahead of City and with a superior goal difference. A draw will be enough for Carlos Carvalhal's side to secure a top-six place and Warnock admits he can't see

“I know Russell well, he started off with me when I brought him in to look after my young lads at Notts County when he was still teaching,” Warnock said in Wales Online.

“And looking at what he’s done at Cardiff he’s definitely steadied the ship. I think you can see real stability at the club from what he’s done there and they have given it a go this season.

“But, to be honest, I think Sheffield Wednesday will have a bit too much and I don't think they will lose the game, which is the only thing they have to do.

"It’s a bit too much for Cardiff with the way it’s fallen; I think if the season had gone on another month they would have had a real chance. It’s a shame for them that the gap that is there has developed at the wrong time."

While Wednesday only need a point, Warnock admitted that won't be a factor as Carvalhal's attacking sensibilities mean the Owls won;t be sitting back.

"That’s the big plus for Russell, Wednesday can’t play for a draw, they’re just not that type of a team,” said Warnock, who masterminded one of the few . "And that means there will be opportunities for Cardiff. Thye’ve got some pace, good ability out wide and can create chances, but it’s a matter of keeping Fernando Forestieri quiet and being strong in the midfield area."
