RESIDENTS in the Ecclesall Road area are objecting to the latest application to extend the opening hours of a bar.
They are trying curb the hours of the Velvet Lounge, which is due to replace the Walnut Club, warning of noise and other disturbance into the early morning.
A council trial allowing the premises to stay open an extra hour until half past midnight expired at the end of last month – and the applicants are asking for it to be extended for another year.
Residents’ groups have campaigned persistently to restrict the opening hours of bars and restaurants on Ecclesall Road and the latest request for the Velvet Lounge is also being opposed. “Granting this application will open the floodgates for further late night opening along Ecclesall Road, which will substantially change the character of the district centre,” says one objector.
Protests have been lodged by the Endcliffe Corner Community Organisation, the Botanical Gate Association and Broomhill Green Party. Council officers will recommend on Monday a further six months’ experiment on the basis they could not monitor the effects of previous trial because of the closure of the Walnut Club.
