New chapter for babies at Doncaster nappy library

It’s a case of happy nappy for babies in Doncaster thanks to a new service.

A cloth nappy library has opened its doors at St Aidan’s Church in Wheatley Hills, offering help and support for mums.

Michelle Walters is a volunteer for the Doncaster branch of the National Childbirth Trust, a UK-wide parenting charity which supports thousands of mums and dads from all backgrounds, providing information, counselling and more.

She said: “As a mum myself, I was interested in using cloth nappies on my fourth child, but found Doncaster had no nappy library service.

“I spoke to the other volunteer members of the branch and we decided to offer this service to the parents of Doncaster.

“Through fundraising and generous donations of nappies we have now launched the library. For a minimal fee, parents can borrow kits of nappies to try.

“We also offer peer support and advice on using reusable nappies as well as demonstrations.”

The library – whose launch coincided with the national Real Nappy Week – will be open every Friday, from 10am to 11.30am.

Resuable cloth nappies are promoted both for economic and environmental benefits.

A spokesman for Go Real, the real nappy information service, said: “For every year a baby is in nappies, they will need nearly 2,000 nappy changes.

“With potty training averaging at two-and-a-half years, that is nearly 5,000 nappies per child.

“And at an average cost of 16p per disposable, between them parents in England and Wales are spending about £0.5 billion on disposable nappies every year.

“Recent research by Go Real shows parents can save anything from £150 to more than £1,000 over the lifetime of using nappies – those are huge savings for cash-strapped families and savings stack up even further when nappies are used on a second and third child.

“Go Real also estimates, with the majority of the 800,000-plus babies born in England and Wales each year using disposables, that’s a staggering three billion disposable nappies being used – which translates into more than 355,000 tonnes of waste produced and an annual disposal cost to local authorities of £32 million.”
