New lease of life for Sheffield rock bar

A Sheffield brewery has reopened a closed pub - despite the fact it is in an area earmarked for future regeneration.

The Tap and Tankard, on Cambridge Street near John Lewis, will open this Friday December 12 after Kelham Island Brewery gave it a refurbishment.

It was formerly The Sportsman rock bar, which moved to new premises on Burgess Street nearby earlier this year.

The area is set to be part of Sheffield’s new retail quarter when it eventually comes to fruition.

But Ed Wickett, owner of Kelham Island Brewery, said: “We know this part of town has been earmarked for redevelopment since 2005 but the pub was empty and in a good spot so we decided to give it a go.

“We might only be here for a few years but it was too good an opportunity to miss.”

The new pub has a Sheffield theme and its rock bar interior has been replaced with a bright new decor.

Ed added: “We are going provide a great line up of cask ales, from different local breweries, in a relaxed atmosphere. The location fits in nicely with some of the city’s other great cask ale pubs so we hope people will pop in and give us a try.”
