The contract for the 10km race, which is now entering its 10th year, expired in 2015. Partners are therefore being invited to bid to relaunch the event to take it to its next phase.

The city council’s cabinet member for neighbourhoods Sioned-Mair Richards said: “This is a really exciting opportunity for sport and fitness in the Sheffield.

“Whilst the Great Yorkshire Run was a popular event, we believe that runners will thrive on a fresh new challenge and that it will attract many more visitors to the city.

“We’re asking potential providers to look at a range of activities linked to the main race so the event will be more inclusive and encourage all ages and abilities to participate.

“We’ve seen how successful the new half marathon race is and with the right provider, we are confident that we can take the 10km race to the next level.”

The new provider will be expected to:

- Create a new look and feel for the event

- Encourage entries from runners at all levels of ability

- Grow the event in size year on year

- Attract new runners who have never taken part in a Sheffield 10km race

- Develop the event by incorporating additional activities to form a portfolio of events – potentially running over the whole weekend.

The contract to manage and organise the race will be for three years, with the potential to extend for a further two years. The council expects the new event to be launched sometime in late 2016 or early 2017.

Coun Richards said: “Sheffield’s sporting legacy is something we are very proud of. We need an event that will motivate people to take up active and healthy lifestyles whatever their circumstances, and who knows we might even inspire our next generation of athletes.

“I encourage organisations with ideas and commitment to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity and show us what they can do.”

The tender documents are available online at www.yortender.co.uk. Organisations who would like to bid can apply online until April 15.
