New Sheffield barbecue joint gives away free food to celebrate opening

Thousands of people could turn up at the opening of a new Sheffield barbecue restaurant as it gives away a feast of free food to mark its unveiling.

Red’s True Barbecue is taking over what used to be the Café Rouge site on Ecclesall Road on April 15.

On Wednesday April 13 pitmasters at the new American style restaurant will fill their smokers with around 900 pounds of meat and serve barbecue to crowds until supplies run out.

A similar event in Headingley, Leeds, attracted massive crowds and so far more than 5,000 people have said they are interested in attending the Red’s House Party Sheffield event on Facebook.

James Newman, from Red’s, said: “Our pitmasters will be filling the smokers with around 900lbs of meat and will serve authentic US barbecue until they run dry.

“The queue will start from around 5pm and for the lucky ones that make it in they can expect a selection of our award-winning barbecue, with baby back or St Louis ribs, XXXL oak smoked chicken wings, brisket Philly cheese steak and our famous pulled pork sandwich, plus a choice of sides and a beer - all on us.

“Expect a few surprise guests turning up to entertain too.

“This our way of saying hello to the good people of Sheffield before we officially open on Friday April 15.”

Work is currently underway on converting the restaurant into a two-floor venue with 130 covers in a £900,000 makeover.

The Sheffield site is the latest to open as part of the brand’s expansion.

Some 60 jobs will be created at the restaurant.
