Dawn Copley was appointed as temporary chief constable for South Yorkshire Police on Wednesday following the immediate suspension of David Crompton over his handling of the force’s approach to the Hillsborough inquests and its response to the verdict that 96 Liverpool supporters were unlawfully killed.

But it has now emerged Ms Copley has been under investigation following a ‘number of allegations’ against her.

Greater Manchester Police has said an independent investigation into the allegations has now concluded - but has not revealed the nature of the complaints or the findings of the investigation.

A GMP spokesperson said: “An independent investigation was undertaken by Kent Police following a number of allegations that were made by an individual.

“We have received a copy of the report and sent it to the complainant as requested. The individual now has 28 days to appeal the findings.

“It would be inappropriate for us to make further comment about the detail in the report.”

It is understood police commissioner Dr Alan Billings was aware of the proceedings involving Ms Copley prior to her appointment as temporary chief constable yesterday.

In a brief statement released yesterday, Deputy Chief Constable Copley confirmed she had agreed to act as temporary chief constable following the suspension of Mr Crompton.

She said: “This is a significant day for South Yorkshire Police. However, we are absolutely determined to maintain our focus on delivering the best possible policing services to the communities of South Yorkshire.”

Ms Copley was promoted to Deputy Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police in September 2015, having previously worked in the North West of England.

Her responsibilities at South Yorkshire Police included being part of the force’s ‘external enquiries team’ which deals with issues relating to Hillsborough, Orgreave and child sexual exploitation.

It comes after police commissioner Alan Billings said he did not expect Mr Crompton to return to South Yorkshire Police.

Mr Crompton had been due to retire in November but has now been suspended on full pay from his £195,000-a-year job.
