New space opens for community groups in Sheffield suburb

A community organisation in Sheffield is hosting a Spring fair to show off its new facilities after it took over a new building to expand its services.

The Burton Street Foundation in Hillsborough expanded after taking over an old factory, known locally as the Bamforth Building, across the road from its original site.

The new space, which was officially opened this week, includes a range of new facilities, including an independent living training bungalow, new spaces for children’s activities and space for community groups to utilise.

Clare Mappin, Managing Director of the Burton Street Foundation, said: “Our main buildings at Burton Street Foundation were saved from demolition 20 years ago by the local community.

“This beautiful site wouldn’t exist without the involvement and passion of many community groups.

“Not only has the community been a fundamental part of our beginnings, but it also continues to be a major part of our future.”

The Burton Street Foundation plans to increase the number of people from the local community accessing its facilities and is arranging a programme of events to see what facilities local residents would like to have available in Hillsborough.

The first event will be the Spring Fair on Sunday, April 24.

“The location has so much potential to offer a wide range of activities and space for local groups. We hope many local groups and individuals will benefit from our sharing our new community hub,” added Clare.
