Opera in the barn

OPERA is coming to Whirlow Hall farm for the first time. A fundraising evening featuring music from the world’s favourite operas and sponsored by Pentagon Saab Sheffield will be held in the barn on Saturday, July 23.

Organiser Sarah Kerrigan said: “Whirlow Hall Farm may not be the most obvious place to enjoy the opera but the barn will provide an excellent and unusual backdrop and great acoustics for an evening at the opera.”

Tickets cost £20.

Students’ union glory

THE University of Sheffield Students’ Union has been nominated for five prizes at the 2011 National Union of Students Awards in Leeds next month – the highest number of nominations in the country.

They are Emily Nix as Student of the Year, Kathryne Fraser as Students’ Union Staff Member of the Year, Matthew Burgess as Student Journalist of the Year, Students’ Union’s Forge FM as Best Student Media and a nomination for Best Community Relations.

Summer street market

THE next Nether Edge farmers’ market, combined with a summer fair, is on Sunday from noon to 4pm and will raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Parts of Nether Edge Road and Glen Road will be closed to traffic.

Teenage drink blitz

CHECKS on 15 licensed premises around Mosborough and Woodhouse found no traders were prepared to sell alcohol to police cadets posing as under-age drinkers.

More operations are planned.

Car boot application

AN APPLICATION has been made to Sheffield City Council for Owlerton Sports Stadium in Penistone Road to be used for car boot sales and Sunday markets. Officers are considering the details.
