News in brief: Peak walkers rescued

SIXTY mountain rescue team members from Buxton, Edale and Kinder were involved in an operation to find two walkers lost in the dark and cold of Kinder Scout on Saturday night.

The walkers, in their early 20s, from Devon and Norfolk, called for help by mobile phone. They were escorted to their campsite at Edale.

Bottled water ban

STUDENTS at the University of Sheffield have voted overwhelmingly to ban bottled water around the students’ union in a referendum. In the next 12 months, the union will sell reusable water bottles and install more free water fountains. It will lobby the university to do the same in its outlets.

Dam project explained

THE Friends of the Porter Valley will give an update on the project to repair the dam at Shepherd Wheel on Saturday, March 19 from 1pm to 3pm. A DVD explaining progress will be available.

Starstruck donors

MEMBERS of Crookes Club have handed over a £1,000 cheque to the Under The Stars nightclub for people with learning disabilities – proceeds of a concert featuring the Dale Storr New Orleans Rhythm and Blues Band, The Hummingbirds Blues Band and Steve Cosgrove.

Chatsworth reopens

CHATSWORTH House opens for the new season on Sunday, open daily until December 23. One of the highlights will be an Our Favourite Things display curated by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and containing items never seen before.
