NICK Clegg’s wife, Miriam González Durántez, is backing a campaign to reduce the number of babies dying suddenly in Sheffield.

The wife of the Deputy Prime Minister and Hallam MP is helping to raise awareness about sudden infant death syndrome, which claims 35 local babies each year before their first birthday, slightly higher than the national average.

A citywide health strategy is encouraging mothers to breastfeed, and parents not to smoke in the house, and is promoting safe sleeping routines.

Mrs González Durántez said: “I am honoured to be an infant mortality champion and am fully committed to helping in whichever way I can.”
