Wednesday were 2-0 up through goals from Aiden McGeady and Gary Hooper when Forest were given a lift as Barry Bannan was sent off for the Owls.

However, the visitors increased their advantage through Marco Matias and that proved to be the final nail in the coffin for Freedman.

Forest had been expected to challenge for promotion this campaign, but currently lie 14th in the Championship standings having lost five of their last six games.

That has prompted chairman Fawaz Al-Hasawi to part company with the 41-year-old Scot, who has been in charge at the City Ground since February 2015.

A brief statement read: "Nottingham Forest have terminated manager Dougie Freedman's contract with immediate effect.

"The club would like to thank Dougie for all of his efforts during his time at The City Ground.

"First-team coach Paul Williams will take over the management of the side until the end of the season.

"The club will be making no further comment at this time."
