Opposition tabled over £73 chairs for council

Opposition Liberal Democrats in Sheffield criticised the spending of £26,000 on furniture for council offices at Moorfoot.

They said it included £17,000 for 230 chairs and over £9,000 for tables in the former Manpower Service Commission building.

Lib Dem finance spokesman Coun Andrew Sangar said: “Local residents will be furious that, at a cost of £75 a chair, their tax has been poured into plush furniture for swanky council offices.”

Total refurbishment of the offices is expected to cost around £8m, he added.

But a council spokesman said it was part of the strategy approved “with all-party support to save £2.4m a year.

“The council intends to rationalise the leased accommodation we occupy across the city in 26 different locations, and concentrate on three key sites. savin sites that we own, including Moorfoot, where around 2,600 staff will be re-located. This is estimated to save the council around £2.4m a year.”
