SOUTH Yorkshire sailors Matthew Velamail and Tim Brownell raised a massive £9,000 for charity in a gruelling 24-hour boat race.
The 20-year-olds, both members of Ulley Sailing Club in Rotherham, are giving the money to the Brain Tumour Research charity in honour of Matthew’s dad Dr Vetrivel Velamail, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2009.
Matthew and Tim spent 24 hours on their Enterprise dinghy during the event in Southport.
Dr Velamail, a former GP at Morthen Road Surgery in Rotherham, said: “Matt ended up with bleeding toes from using the toestraps - wind conditions were really bad.”
“Every penny raised will go towards researching a cure.”
