Paralysed patients from Sheffield to compete in sports event

Patients from a Sheffield hospital's spinal unit are to take part in a sports event for paralysed people.

A team of 11 patients from the Princess Royal Spinal Unit at Northern General Hospital will take part in the Inter Spinal Unit Games for spinal injury centres across the UK and Ireland.

The event introduces wheelchair sports to recently paralysed people.

Held at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, for many participants the Games will be their first trip away from hospital and will form part of their rehabilitation journey.

Dan Metcalfe-Hall, aged 27, represented Sheffield last year and has since developed into one of Britain’s most promising prospects in hand

He said: “Handcycling has made me who I am now. It has given me a focus and a drive. It’s given me purpose.”

The Inter Spinal Unit Games is organised by WheelPower, the national charity of wheelchair sport.
