Work to cover a historic cobbled path at a Sheffield beauty spot with asphalt was stopped after residents raised concerns.
The Friends of Porter Valley group said they had not been consulted over the work to a path in Forge Dam, Fulwood.
Members, and nearby residents, contacted Sheffield Council which then stopped the work that had begun.
Friends member Ros Hancock said there was another parallel footpath with a smooth surface that people could use.
She added: “The path does need relaying but covering it up is not the right thing to do.
“It is just the cheaper option and my personal view is that there is a bit of a panicky health and safety policy on anything that is perceived as a possible danger.”
