Sheffield maternity staff organised wedding in 24 hours for dying mum – days after giving birth
Staff at the Jessop Wing maternity unit in Sheffield have been praised for organising a wedding for a dying mum days after she gave birth.
Hannah Wilson gave birth to her daughter Sadie on March 4, just one week after being diagnosed with cancer.
Sadie was delivered at 31 weeks and weighed just 3lb 9oz.
During the Caesarean section, medics discovered that Hannah’s cancer was more advanced than initially thought and the primary school teacher from Tankersley, Barnsley, was given just weeks to live.
The 41-year-old was already a devoted mum to her son Jude, aged 22 months.
With her daughter receiving care at the Jessop Wing, staff helped Hannah organise a wedding to her long term partner, Andrew, and a naming ceremony for their two children.
Hannah lost her fight for life seven weeks after her daughter’s birth.
Paying tribute to staff at the unit for helping Hannah fulfil her wishes, her family said: “Hannah had been with her partner Andrew for 10 years but they’d never got around to getting married, even though this is something they planned to do one day.
“So, with less than 24 hours notice their wedding was booked, along with a naming ceremony for the children. All planned to take place within Jessops hospital.
“The staff had never organised a wedding before, but you wouldn’t have known. They arranged every little detail you could possibly think of - from a cake, flowers and balloons, to wedding favours. They even decorated Hannah and Andrew’s hospital room as a honeymoon suite, with ‘Just Married’ signs and some fizz.
“Morrison’s donated enough food to feed a small army, the chaplain worked her day off and the nurses bought so many gifts that we needed a trolley to push it all out of the hospital.
“It was the most emotional and unique day that could ever be. We can not thank Jessops enough for the thought and effort they put into this day, while still carrying out their extremely demanding day jobs.”
An online crowdfunding appeal has been set up in Hannah’s memory, with all donations to be shared between Jessop Wing, Barnsley Hospice, Barnsley Neonatal Unit, The Ambulance Wish Foundation and the charity Mummy’s Star.
