South Yorkshire MPs claimed more than £2.4 million in business costs and expenses last year, new figures have shown.
The data published yesterday showed the amount claimed by the region’s 14 MPs totalled £2,426,282 during 2014-15.
Rotherham Labour MP Sarah Champion had the highest overall costs of any South Yorkshire MP, totalling £200,317, with the vast majority, at £154,747 , for staffing.
MPs outside London can usually claim up to £140,000 for annual staffing.
Ms Champion said she had requested an ‘emergency uplift’ to her budget last September for a full-time specialist child sexual exploitation case worker in the wake of the town’s grooming scandal.
Ms Champion said: “This was to assist me in providing high-level expert support to the huge number of new victims and survivors who came to me following publication of the Jay report.
“My staffing budget has now returned to normal levels. This was fully agreed by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority and within their guidelines.”
For travel expenses, the highest amount in South Yorkshire was claimed by Wentworth and Dearne MP John Healey, at £11,832.
Sheffield South East MP Clive Betts only just had the highest total for accommodation, at £20,600 claimed.
He also had the highest office costs in South Yorkshire at £23,194.
In Sheffield, the city’s six MPs claimed a total of £1,063,907.
The highest overall costs for a Sheffield MP were £188,032, for Stocksbridge and Penistone Labour MP Angela Smith.
The shadow minister for food, farming and animal welfare claimed £11,405 in travel, the most of Sheffield’s MPs, which she said was down to her minister work nationwide.
Ms Smith said: “If we want to make sure ordinary people without private resources are able to represent our interests in Parliament, it is important these people are allowed to recover the costs they incur in so doing. It is also important these expenses are transparent to the taxpayer.
“Also, being a shadow minister comes with extra responsibilities and costs incurred through duties carried out around the country. I am sure my constituents will agree it is important to have an effective opposition but that should not take place solely in Westminster.”
Mr Betts’ total costs were £184,972. Sheffield Central MP Paul Blomfield’s were £181,342, including the city’s highest staffing cost at £138,424.
Sheffield Hallam Liberal Democrat MP Nick Clegg claimed £171,372. Former Sheffield Heeley Labour MP Meg Munn claimed £169,252 and former Brightside and Hillsborough MP David Blunkett claimed £168,937.
