A car smashed into a garage after a police chase close to Sheffield city centre, it is claimed.

There are six police cordons in place around Hodgson Street, Thomas Street and Headford Street in Broomhall this morning.

Pictures and video footage also emerged in the immediate aftermath of the incident showing a vehicle smashed against a building.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: "it was a Mercedes A class car and he had smashed into the garage at Pinders after a police chase.

"There was around six police and two ambulances there after it happened.

A woman who works in a cafe close to the scene said: "I heard it was a hit-and-run but I don't know much more than that."

Another man who works in the area added an officer at the scene would only describe it as a "serious incident" and added the area could be sealed off all day.

It is believed police have been at the scene since the early hours of this morning.
