Workmen for Stagecoach Supertram arrived between the Leighton Road and Herdings Park tram stops at around 12.45pm.

Jordan Connor, 20, from Rotherham, was visiting a friend in the area when he came across the tram.

He said: "I wasn't far away from when it happened. I was a bit shocked - it was something I didn't expect to see.

"Nobody was hurt - there was about six people on the tram at the time, they seemed to be okay. Engineers were using jacks to try and get the tram back on the tracks."

A bus replacement service is now in place between Herdings Park and Gleadless Townend.

The Star understands the tram came off the tracks due to vandalism.

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive has been contacted for a comment.
