AS a conference on air quality is held in Sheffield, Deputy Prime Minister and Hallam MP Nick Clegg is being urged to ensure the Government fulfils its commitment to meeting European targets.

Neil Parry, of the East End Quality of Life Initiative, said: “Many areas of Sheffield have poor air quality which is having a serious health effect on many citizens of Sheffield and is costing the city around £100m in health costs.”

He wants the Government to give a higher priority to measures to tackle traffic fumes.

The conference, backed by the Initiative, the council and NHS Sheffield, is being held tomorrow (Friday) at Friends Meeting House in St James Street.
