LORD Mayor Sylvia Dunkley retires today as a councillor, after 17 years of representing Ecclesall for the Liberal Democrats. However, she will hold the ceremonial position until the annual council meeting on May 16.

Two former Lord Mayors are stepping down, each having been 20 years on the council – Jane Bird (Labour, Shiregreen and Brightside), and Arthur Dunworth (Lib Dem, Stannington).

Altogether, nine Lib Dem councillors are leaving the Town Hall after 133 years between them. The others are Ali Qadar (Nether Edge) 16 years, John Knight (Fulwood) 16, Brian Holmes (Crookes) 14, Louise McCann (Beauchief & Greenhill) four, and Joe Taylor (Hillsborough) four.
