Protest in Sheffield against Calais refugee camp bulldozing

A group of protestors turned out for a last-minute protest against the French authority's decision to bulldoze part of the '˜Jungle' refugee camp.

Dozens of campaigners gathered outside Town Hall yesterday evening with less than an hours notice after being ‘appalled’ at the decision to demolish part of the Calais camp.

Protest organiser Harriet Samworth, aged 41, said: “They have evicted 2,299 people from the camp – including 305 unaccompanied children – and we just felt we could not just sit back and accept this.

“We just want to show the French authorities how angry we are that they have demolished part of the camp.”

Harriet, who works with Sheffield to Calais Waste Group and Sheffield Donations to Refugees, is arranging another peaceful protest outside the Town Hall on Saturday at 1.30pm.
