Rap megastar Drake namechecks Doncaster street on new album

The hip-hop star's new album Views, released yesterday, features a song called Weston Road Flows - about the area in Toronto where he was born and grew up.

But of course, Doncaster has its very own Weston Road - the lengthy Balby thoroughfare travelled by many school pupils on a daily basis to Balby Carr Community Academy.

In the song, the sixth track on his latest album, he raps: "Weston Road Flows, I did this s*** for my n**** Renny/Back when we couldn't buy pizza cause we were down to pennies."

Well, just for fun, we thought we'd compare the two roads - and we've discovered the star, whose real name is Aubrey Graham, could have bought pizza if he'd come to the Weston Road in Doncaster.

And that's because the Weston Fish Bar and Grill, situated on Weston Road offers a range of pizzas on its Facebook page - so he'd have been able to tuck into a deep-pan treat or two.

Here's the lowdown on the two Weston Roads...

WESTON ROAD, TORONTO

Weston Road is named for the former Village of Weston, which was located near Weston Road and Lawrence Avenue West.

Most of Weston is a four-lane arterial road through residential areas, except for the northern section which is mostly industrial.

Two bus routes serve Weston Road: 89 Weston and 165 Weston Road North.

Weston–Mount Dennis was once a centre of manufacturing, and later a centre of small immigrant shops. Eventually one type of business, hair salons and barbershops serving the Black community, came to predominate. In 2012, a community organizer proposed proclaiming it an official hair district.

WESTON ROAD, BALBY

The road leads from the main A60 Tickhill Road between Doncaster and Tickhill to Balby Carr Community Academy,

The road is mostly residential with a parade of shops. St John's Hospice is at one end, with the school at the other.

The earliest written reference to Balby occurs in the Domesday Book (1086), which records the name as Balle(s)bi. This almost certainly derives from a personal name, Bal, together with the Old Norse word býr(meaning a farm) – dating the foundation of Balby to some time in the period of Viking settlement, between the late 8th and early 11th centuries.

Weston Road is served by the 72 and 73 First bus services.

Drake, 29, released Views, his fourth studio album yesterday.

The rapper, singer, songwriter, producer and actor first garnered recognition for his role as Jimmy Brooks on the television series Degrassi: The Next Generation. He later rose to prominence as a rapper with songs such as Hotline Bling and One Dance.
