Readers respond to job interview no-show claims in Sheffield

Opinion has been split on Sheffield jobseekers after a company boss revealed half of those who applied for a role with his firm failed to show for interview.

Nick Murphy, managing director of HS Direct, a health and safety assessment company near Meadowhall, said 12 people offered interviews did not show up.

Katie Louisa Gough said: “Most people are forced into applying for jobs that they have no qualifications for and zero experience in just to satisfy the Jobcentre.

“Unfortunately this is what happens.”

John Yeates said: “What do people expect when the Jobcentre make thousands of people apply for the same job to fill their quotas? Could be hundreds of reasons half didn’t turn up.”

Chelsea Wilkins said: “I doubt all the people who didn’t turn up were on benefits, they are just the easy target to blame.”

Mathew Alcock said: “Sometimes people just get a better offer of work. Not only that but most job hunters tend to bulk apply for lots of jobs. Sometimes its the other way around where applicants never hear anything back.”

Lyn Kattz said: “Although it is rude to not get in touch, most potential employers don’t even acknowledge those who apply.”

Matthew James McCartney said: “If the government made the benefits system less attractive then people would be glad of jobs that paid £15,000 a year.”
