Residents are fighting plans for a car wash on a restaurant car park in Sheffield.

Plans have been submitted to Sheffield Council seeking permission to use the car park of Amraj Restaurant – the former George and Dragon pub – on High Street, Beighton for the business.

Applicant Mohammed Shuker Mohamadamin, of Verdon Street, Burngreave, says in the planning application the business would create two full-time and three part-time positions and would be open from 9am to 5pm each day.

But neighbours living near the site have objected to the scheme.

Joanne Addy, of Cairns Road, Beighton, said: “The car park is well known for flooding in the area and the amount of cars that this would attract would cause a lot of heavy traffic through the high street which even has a lollipop lady on that road because of the amount of traffic now never mind when a car wash facility is there.

“It would just cause too much amount of traffic for such a small village and it would cause too much of a danger for school children walking to and from school.”

Mandy Taylor, of Eckington Road, said: “It will be an awful eyesore on Beighton village. It is just starting to look better with empty public houses being transformed and it doesn’t need a portable building and car wash placed in a car park, making it look ugly and be an eyesore.”

But Nadeem Majida, owner of the Amraj Restaurant next door, backs the application saying he hopes the car wash will solve the car park’s litter problem.

He said: “We would be very happy for someone to take it over as we have to keep cleaning it.

“It reflects badly on us and it looks like a tip. Some people won’t park there because it’s where kids come to play football and they are afraid their cars will get smashed up. All I can see from the window is fish and chip wrappers and those little blue forks.

“People are going to think what kind of an area is this?”
